CALANCHES DE PIANA SCENIC DRIVE
The narrow D81 road between Porto and Piana offers a thrilling 12-kilometre-long drive through the superb scenery of the Calanches. This famous Corsican corniche route carved into the granite cliffs grants long-lasting memories of some of the most scenic corners in Europe.
HIKING
Both Scandola and Calanches de Piana provide excellent trekking opportunities tailored to different skill levels suitable for novice hikers, families, or more experienced walkers.
An easy walk to Cateau Fort in the fascinating scenery of the Calanches starts on the scenic D81 next to a famous Tete de Chien rock 700 m north of the Roches Bleues café. This 1-hour long trail running through wooded terrain culminates with a rocky plateau exposed to stupendous views of Scandola and the Gulf of Porto. It may get busy in summer therefore arrive early.
A more challenging coastal trek known as the Postman’s Trail (Le Sentier du Facteur) leads from the main corniche road to the picturesque village of Girolata in Scandola Nature Reserve. It is named after the local postman who used to deliver mail to the isolated hamlet inaccessible by car. This 4-hour round trip starts at Col de la Croix descending to the pretty Cala di Tuara cove. From there the left-leading path open to breathtaking panoramas of the Reserve runs to the village.
2. HILLTOP VILLAGES OF BALAGNE
Balagne, the northern territory of the island, also known as the Garden of Corsica is famous for its postcard-perfect hilltop villages. 5. FANGO RIVER HIKING
Set out on a fun Fango River adventure for a day filled with freshwater splashing and sliding. This virgin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve located 45 minutes from Calvi near Galeria is dominated by some of Corsica’s most untamed scenery. Nestled at the foot of Paglia Orba’s northern wall, Fango is Corsica’s true hidden gem ideal for wild swimming in emerald river pools, or easy family canyoning down its course. Surprisingly, the water is not only supremely clear but also pleasantly warm.
KAYAKING IN THE FANGO RIVER DELTA
To explore the endemic fauna and flora of this unique Reserve you may head for a soothing paddling expedition in the Fango River delta. Gliding on the water surface in serene silence you will have an opportunity to watch pond turtles basking on river banks. On-site, you can rent kayaks or family canoes for €8 per person for an hour of paddling. Tours are available from June to the end of September.
6. BEACH HOPPING ON THE COASTAL TRAIN
A great way to explore the glorious Balagne shores is on the famous Trinichellu train connecting Calvi and Ile Rousse. This slow-running multi-carriage coastal tram stops at some of the most beautiful beach destinations in the region. The whole journey takes 45 minutes but you may get off at any of the stops if you fancy a refreshing break at one of the aquamarine coves. 6 BEST BEACHES TO VISIT
- SANT’AMBROGGIO BEACH – a charming turquoise-water white sand beach sloping gently into the sea, very popular with families and lovers of snorkelling.
- AREGNO BEACH – a 1-kilometre-long stretch of coarse white sand overlooked by a medieval citadel in Algajola where you may enjoy various watersports and outdoor activities.
- MARINE DE DAVIA BEACH – a succession of three stunning coves called Vignola, Capité, and Fornella granting peace and seclusion even in high season.
- GHJUNCHITU BEACH – a sublime 500 m-long white sand and strikingly blue water bay boasting a couple of relaxing beach bars and summer supervision.
- BODRI BEACH – known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Balagne this Caribbean-style turquoise cove is protected by rocky headlands perfect for snorkelling. Popular among families.

7. BOTANIC GARDEN – PARC DE SALECCIA
Located near Ile Rousse Parc de Saleccia, a 7-ha botanic garden, showcases a diverse range of Corsican and Mediterranean flora including many endemic species. Lovers of nature will appreciate the colourful abundance of collected specimens contrasting with the rugged scenery of Corsica’s northern shores. Easy to access, the park offers not only an immersive botanical tour of plants but also features a gift shop and a café. 8. SEASIDE RESORT OF ILE ROUSSE
Set out on a day trip to Ile Rousse, one of Corsica’s most attractive seaside resorts with a Riviera-style waterfront, interesting historic monuments, a fabulous white sand beach, and a vibrant atmosphere. Located only 20 kilometres east of Calvi, Ile Rousse enjoys a picturesque setting sheltered behind a red-coloured rocky island Ile de la Pietra. Founded by Pasquale Paoli in the 18th century, the town has always stood for independence competing with the Genoese-controlled Calvi.
The town’s top attractions include its historic 21-column covered food market, the centrally-located Church of Immaculate Conception, a 19th-century lighthouse and a Genoese watchtower crowning Ile de la Pietra. Food and wine lovers should try delicious Corsican specialities and taste local wines. You may join a guided wine tour or head out on an evening boat trip to savour a sunset aperitif on the water.
9. HIKING IN BALAGNE
The Balagne region offers excellent hiking opportunities for both, walking novices and experienced adventurers. As a rule of thumb, the shorter coastal trails are easier and more suitable for families whereas mountains provide more challenging, technical treks. All of them, however, grant access to the mesmerizing Corsican nature and breathtaking views.
IMPORTANT TIP – When hiking in Corsica, wear comfortable covered shoes, a hat and SPF protection on exposed skin. Always carry plenty of water and high-energy snacks.
POPULAR HIKES IN BALAGNE
1. POINTE DE LA REVELLATA
Easily available from Calvi the scenic coastal hike to Pointe de la Revellata follows a 9.2 km trail around a beautiful rocky peninsula. This easy walk showcases some of the best Mediterranean scenery where dramatic red cliffs contrast picture-perfect secluded coves. The east side of the promontory offers easy access to turquoise-water beaches where you may enjoy a refreshing swim or a picnic. There is very little to no shade along the path.
2. ABANDONED OCCI VILLAGE
3 kilometers inland from the coast above Lumio the ghost Occi village offers a unique glimpse into Corsica’s past. Abandoned in the 19th century due to disease and economic strife it now features picturesque ruins of stone houses and a church. At sunset, Occi becomes a popular spot for landscape photographers who make the most of the hamlet’s eerie presence exposed to the sweeping northern coast’s views. The trail starts in Lumio climbing the hill for around 45 minutes. Hiking poles might be useful during the descent.
3. FIGARELLA VALLEY
Rushing waterfalls, emerald river pools perfect for cooling dips, aromatic forests and miles of shaded hiking trails- the beautiful Valley of Figarella guarantees fun for nature enthusiasts, families and hikers alike. The pristine natural beauty of this scenic place may be easily reached from Calvi in 30 minutes via the D81-D251 route that culminates in a spacious car park bordering the torrent.
4. GR20 – CALENZANA
The village of Calenzana is the trailhead for the iconic 180 km long GR20 trail traversing the island. Although the trek typically takes around 15 days to complete you may head out to explore a part of its 11-kilometers-long first stage that leads to Refuge d’Ortu di u Piobbu. Considered one of the most challenging stretches of GR20, it climbs up the rocky terrain featuring some scrambling and exposed sections along its enchanting route. The first stage takes around 6 hours with the refuge providing basic accommodation and simple meals. Due to the hike’s difficulty and elevation gain, proper physical conditioning and appropriate gear are essential.
