NATURAL SWIMMING POOLS OF SOLENZARA – RIVER PARADISE NEAR BAVELLA

by Karola

Natural pools formed by Solenzara River in the heart of Bavella, Corsica’s iconic mountain range, are among the most beautiful on the island. While there are numerous swimming spots along the stream, in this guide I focus on two of the most popular- U Rosumarinu and U Ponte Grossu.

Both provide a beautiful setting for a cooling dip or a riverside picnic, but each has its own character and facilities. Below, you’ll find practical information on how to get there, where to park and what to expect at each location, with a few useful tips to help you make the most of your visit.

LOCATION

The natural swimming pools of Solenzara River are located in South Corsica, along the scenic D268 mountain road connecting the coastal town of Solenzara with the Bavella massif. Surrounded by ancient Laricio pine forests and towering granite peaks, they are an ideal place for a lovely stopover on the way into the mountains or a relaxing day in nature.

U Rosumarinu and U Ponte Grossu are two popular spots for accessing the river, both easily reached by car and particularly convenient for visitors staying around Porto Vecchio, exploring the Alta Rocca mountains, or travelling through South Corsica.

MY ADVICE – Bring suitable water shoes. The rocky riverbed and slippery stones can make exploring the pools challenging. I recommend lightweight, quick-drying footwear with good grip. I personally like Keen Whisper or Newport H2 sandals for this kind of terrain.

1. U ROSUMARINU NATURAL POOLS

One of the first good spots for swimming in the Solenzara river is near the U Rosumarinu campsite and its adjoining restaurant. Easily accessible from the road, it may get busy in summer, but the water is excellent- not too cold and perfectly transparent. It’s a firm favourite among families with children, although its stony banks make suitable river footwear essential.

RESTAURANT AND CAMPSITE

One of the main advantages of this spot is the restaurant overlooking the river. Its shaded terrace is a great place to enjoy a drink on a hot day, but I usually come here for the delicious crusty pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven. Right next to the restaurant, the campsite is a good option for anyone who wants to spend their vacation close to nature, with the sound of the flowing torrent in the background.

ACCESS AND PARKING

At the roundabout in Solenzara, take the D268 toward Bavella and continue for approximately 7.2 km until you reach the U Rosumarinu campsite and restaurant. A large car park is available by the road.

USEFUL TIP – Mobile reception is very patchy or not available in the Bavella mountains. Look up directions and save any information you might need before heading into the valley.

2. U PONTE GROSSU NATURAL POOLS

Further up the Solenzara river, U Ponte Grossu feels like a little mountain oasis, with countless natural pools, rocky coves and small beaches scattered along the torrent’s course. Follow the pine-shaded riverbank to find your own quiet retreat for the day. About one kilometre upstream is a particularly beautiful spot with a wide river beach and calm water where children can splash around. The views are stunning, with granite peaks rising above the forest-covered slopes.

ACCESS AND PARKING

From U Rosumarinu, continue toward Bavella for another 3 kilometres, passing the bridge over Solenzara River. You’ll find a large car park on the right, with plenty of spaces. Parking is paid during the summer season. To reach the swimming spots, follow the path along the riverbank opposite the car park.

ADVENTURE PARK

Near the car park, G-Aventura Accrobranche offers treetop adventure courses for different levels. There are options for children aged three and above, families and more athletic participants. Prices start at €10 for the easiest children’s course. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.

PRACTICAL TIP – Carry some cash. Card payments aren’t always accepted in more remote areas.

SAFETY TIPS FOR RIVER SWIMMING IN CORSICA

  • Always check weather reports before setting out.
  • Cancel your trip in case of storms, heavy rain, or high winds. In the mountains, dangerous flash floods that rapidly change water levels after a rain event are common.
  • Exit the water immediately and leave the river valley if you hear thunder or see lightning.
  • Watch out for increased water levels in autumn, winter, and spring when abundant rains and snowmelt feed the Corsican river network.
  • Be cautious of fast-moving currents, especially after adverse weather. Pay special attention near the waterfalls.
  • Enter slowly, avoiding sudden exposure, which may cause cold water shock.
  • Watch out on slippery, wet rock surfaces. Wear shoes with a good grip while exploring the river or swimming.
  • Supervise children, the elderly, or people with reduced mobility near the river and in the water, to avoid injury or drowning.
  • Before going in, always ensure that you have an easy way to get back out.
  • Avoid jumping into the river even if you see others do it.
  • Don’t drink river water.
