COUVENT SAINT FRANCOIS – LOCATION

Vico is located 15 km northeast of the coastal town of Sagone on the D70 road. With a rich historical legacy of fierce resistance against the Republic of Genova, it maintains its authentic character to this day.

Nestled in the hills between the sea and snow-capped mountains Vico is also known for numerous picturesque trails traversing the rural territory.

Couvent Saint Francois is situated on the outskirts of the village by the D1 road leading to Arbori. Shaded parking spaces are available in the square in front of the building.

Over centuries, the consecutive wings were added to the original building of the convent.

COUVENT SAINT FRANCOIS IN VICO

The construction of the convent financed by a noble lord Giovan Paolo de Leca started in 1481. Originally home to the Franciscans responsible for reviving Corsican Christianity, since 1836 it has hosted the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

The monastery was erected in the place of a small chapel dedicated to St Antoine, however, with active engagement of the local community the holy site continued to grow. Over centuries the consecutive wings were added to the original building, now forming a characteristic u-shaped structure.

During the Revolution, Couvent Saint Francois was seized by the State while the Franciscan monks were only allowed to stay on condition that they pay rent for their monastery. When the authorities eventually decided to sell the property in 1835, Mgr Casanelli de Vico, the bishop of Ajaccio, purchased the building for the Oblates.

Today, this peaceful sanctuary receives visitors all year round. Particularly interesting is the 17th-century church adjacent to the monastery where a 1.85 m high wooden crucifix dominates the sacred space. With expressive features and excellent quality of carving this extraordinary masterpiece is thought to have been created by a master of the great Italian School of the 15th century. Oldest on the island, the figure of Christ was classified as a historic monument in 1960 and carefully restored in 1988.

The hospitable monks residing in the convent run a gite d’étape for hikers and other travelers seeking a restful break in the chestnut forests of the area. Simple rooms with communal cooking facilities may be booked by calling the monastery on 0495 268383.

Couvent Saint Francois also hosts various cultural events. “Les Amis du Couvent”, an association of the monastery’s supporters, organizes concerts, culinary evenings, and conferences keeping the retreat animated with activity.

The church adjacent to the monastery houses the oldest wooden Christ in Corsica.
