ILES LAVEZZI – LOCATION

The Lavezzi Archipelago is located 10 km southeast of Bonifacio in Bouches de Bonifacio, the strait between Corsica and Sardinia.

The 11 km-wide channel dividing the Tyrrhenian and the Mediterranean Sea is notoriously difficult to navigate due to variable winds, strong currents, and undercover reefs.

The Strait of Bonifacio shelters an outstanding natural inheritance of rare flora and fauna species. In 1999 The Natural Reserve of Bouches de Bonifacio was created to conserve and develop unique ecosystems.

Over 80000 hectares of the protected area include – the Lavezzi Archipelago, the Cebricale Islands, the Cliffs of Bonifacio, the Bruzzi Peninsula, the Islets of the Monks, and the Ventilegne Lagoon.

A benchmark in international maritime conservation, the Nature Reserve ensures the implementation of the best practices in monitoring and management of habitats, species, and fragile landscapes.

ILES LAVEZZI – ESSENTIAL FACTS

  • The Lavezzi Archipelago comprises 23 granitic islands, islets, and reefs, covering an area of around 200 hectares.
  • The islands mark the southernmost part of Metropolitan France.
  • The main islands include – Lavezzo, Porraggia, Ratino, Piana, Sperduto, and Cavallo.
  • Lavezzo is the island from which the Archipelago takes its name. Wild and strikingly beautiful, it serves as the main tourist attraction with maritime transport servicing it throughout the year. In the past, Lavezzo was inhabited by the shepherds, whereas today, its dreamy beaches protected by granite boulders provide a peaceful retreat for visiting travellers.
  • Cavallo, ‘the island of the billionaires’, is the only inhabited part of the Archipelago. Its rugged, well-guarded shores remain a destination of choice for celebrities, royalty, and tycoons. A luxurious hotel built directly by the sea provides a serene hideaway in a 5-star setting
  • In 1982, the islands were recognized as a Nature Reserve to become a part of the Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve in 1999. Since 2012 they have been incorporated into the Bouches de Bonifacio International Marine Park managed by a cross-border cooperation institution EGTC.
  • Traces of human presence on the islands date back to prehistoric times with some of the rock shelters originating in the Neolithic period.
  • Except for Cavallo, there is no infrastructure present within the Archipelago. In the absence of basic amenities such as restaurants, transportation, toilets, and drinking water, all necessary supplies must be brought along.

TOP 8 ATTRACTIONS OF THE LAVEZZI ISLANDS

  1. There are two cemeteries within the Archipelago, Acciarino and Furcone, holding graves of over 400 sailors and soldiers who died in the infamous shipwreck in February 1855. La Sémillante frigate on the way to Crimea during the conflict with Russia was caught in a violent storm. The French vessel carrying over 700 men was crushed on the reef near the islands marking the worst shipwreck in the history of the Mediterranean. In honour of the tragically departed victims, a pyramid-shaped memorial was built in 1856 near Cala Lazarina.
  2. Neolithic rock shelters present on the islands allow to trace back the history of human activity within the Archipelago.
  3. An old sheepfold surrounded by fragrant vegetation bears witness to the pastoral traditions of Corsica.
  4. The Santa Maria Chapel gave shelter to monks between the 10th and 16th centuries. Its ruins may be explored to this day.
  5. Set atop a granite rock, the Lavezzi Lighthouse guards the treacherous waters of Bouches de Bonifacio. The original structure was erected in 1874 in the southernmost part of the Lavezzo Island. In 1911 it was replaced by a new building, whereas a modern, automated navigation system powered by solar panels has been in use since 1986. Nowadays, the lighthouse serves as a base of the International Marine Park with its botanical garden representing over 240 local species, many of which rare and protected.
  6. Whether on land, in the sea, or in the air, the fabulously abundant flora and fauna of the Archipelago will satisfy even the most demanding lovers of nature.
