DOES CORSICA HAVE BEAUTIFUL BEACHES?

Yes! Corsica is one of the most exciting beach destinations in the entire Mediterranean region. With over a thousand kilometers of stunning coastline, the island exhibits an endless succession of amazing places to swim, snorkel, dive, and hike. Its dazzling shores are home to a wide array of scenic marine landscapes – ribbons of soft white sand, hidden coves, and picture-perfect bays graciously meld with maquis-covered rocky headlands and tall cliffs.

Whether you are looking for a serene getaway by shallow turquoise waters or are chasing a fun-filled adventure in wind and waves, Corsica has you covered.  One thing that should not be missing from your list of things to do when visiting the island is a boat excursion around the magical coast. Some of Corsica’s best beaches may only be accessed from the sea.

Plage de Bussaglia is a wild pebbly beach nestled in the rocky universe of Corsica’s iconic west coast.

WHICH PART OF CORSICA HAS THE BEST BEACHES?

While all of Corsica is known for its magnificent emerald-water shores, it is the southern part of the island that boasts some of the most celebrated world-renowned beaches.

The region of Porto-Vecchio in the southeast is a true corner of paradise and a must-visit destination for lovers of sea and sand. Plage de Palombaggia, Plage de Santa Giulia, and Plage de Rondinara, superb crystal-clear white-sand lagoons are often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. The southernmost Corsican town of Bonifacio is home to a pair of spectacular azure coves, Plage du Grand and Petit Sperone, that are reminiscent of the Caribbean. However, if you are based in the southeast of Corsica head for the beach of Roccapina. This perfect sweep of the softest sand and intensely blue waters sheltered by rocky headlands from strong winds offers an unforgettable Mediterranean experience amid enchanting seascapes.

The northern coast of Corsica is an equally popular destination for the enthusiasts of beachside holidays. The wild shores of Desert des Agriates, a barren rocky landmass stretching west from Saint Florent, shelter pristine beaches accessible by boat or via the Sentier du Douanier scenic footpath. Plage de Saleccia, Plage du Lotu, and Plage de L’Ostricconi seduce visitors with their striking beauty and remote location, although many smaller coves hidden amid the rocky universe provide a private piece of heaven. Further west near the summer resort of Ile Rousse are Plage de Bodri and Plage de Ghjunchitu where pearly-white sand and clear vividly turquoise water promise a first-class getaway. The never-ending succession of picture-perfect aquamarine bays dotting the coast of Balagne may be visited by a tramway train shuttling up and down the magical shores. Calvi, the westernmost town of the region overlooks a six-kilometer-long curvy sweep of glistening sand washed by shallow blue sea.

Corsica’s rugged west coast is a port of call for lovers of dramatic, untamed scenery where beaches are dominated by soaring cliffs formed by the elements. Plage de Bussaglia, Plage de Caspio and Plage de Gradelle, awe-inspiring coves nestled in the rocky amphitheater around Porto attract with their virgin beauty. For those who can brave hairpin turns of the access road, Anse de Ficajola grants an otherworldly experience where tall walls of the Calanches plunge vertically into the sea. Plage de Arone located 6 km south of the crimson-red pillar of Capu Rossu captivates the imagination with its thrillingly wild beauty and an isolated position. The stretch of the coast between Cargese and Propriano takes on a more tamed appearance translating into a limitless succession of idyllic emerald coves exposed to the island’s golden sunsets.

The vast plains of Corsica’s eastern territory are home to Costa Verde and Costa Serena, otherwise known as littoral oriental, where wide sweeps of powdery sand unceasingly stretch for miles. Restrained in their appearance in comparison with the dramatic seascapes of other parts of the island, the eastern beaches offer calm relaxation and easy access. Plage de Pinia near Ghisonaccia is bordered by sumptuous maritime pine forests, a perfect spot for a shaded picnic, whereas scenic paths crossing the woodland offer great conditions for jogging and walking. South of the village of Solenzara the seawater colour becomes intensely turquoise with Plage the Canella being the most photogenic bay.

ARE THERE SANDY BEACHES IN CORSICA?

Beach lovers visiting Corsica are spoiled for choice on the mesmerizing coast of the ‘Island of Beauty’. Whether you prefer white sandy shores or small rocky coves you are sure to find the perfect landscape to suit your preferences.

Although pebbly beaches offer translucent water and excellent snorkeling conditions it is the paradisiacal sandy lagoons that always steal the spotlight. Luckily, Corsica abounds in an unparalleled variety of white powder stretches where clear emerald water gently laps the idyllic coastline. No matter the region, a picture-perfect sandy beach is just around the corner. If you, however, are a fan of rocks and pebbles, head north to the Cap Corse peninsula, a wild territory that charms visitors with its rugged splendor.

IS THE SEA WARM IN CORSICA?

With over 200 beaches punctuating its picturesque coastline, Corsica offers excellent conditions for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and practicing watersports.

The temperature of the sea surface varies from 13°C in winter to even 27°C in summer. Within a 6-month period, from May to October, water temperatures remain warm allowing for comfortable and relaxing bathing.

While the Corsican spring provides holidaymakers with cool, refreshing dips, the hot Mediterranean summer guarantees delightfully balmy water. Autumn, however, might be the best time to enjoy the island’s luxurious beaches as you may still enjoy the presently warm sea without the crowds and the unceasing heat of July and August.

As a rule of thumb, the island’s west shores grant lower seawater temperatures compared to its eastern counterpart.

Average monthly sea temperatures in Corsica:

  • 18°C – May
  • 21°C – June
  • 24°C – July
  • 26°C – August
  • 25°C – September
