IS PROPRIANO WORTH VISITING?
Propriano isn’t as famous as Porto Vecchio, Calvi, or Ajaccio, but it’s actually one of Corsica’s best choices for a longer stay, with plenty to see and do. Its position is enchanting, in a gorgeous, west-facing bay with green rolling hills all around. It delivers the ideal beach escape, boasting endless sandy shores and harbourside cafés for relaxing with a view of the boats, while in the Valinco region, you will find countless remarkable places and sites worth exploring.
Landscapes here change from turquoise beaches and rushing rivers to rugged mountains and lush valleys. Highland villages feel authentically Corsican, with old customs still enduring. Off-season, the area remains animated as a hub for local life and farming activities. Overlooked by many, Propriano draws savvy locals and repeat visitors looking for a low-key, leisurely retreat away from the crowds.
BOOK A BOAT TRIP FROM PROPRIANO
Enjoy a boat excursion to the Gulf of Valinco. Discover the region’s most beautiful seascapes on a 2-hour boat tour with an aperitif and a snorkelling break. Choose from a morning, afternoon, or sunset tour departing from the Propriano port.

LOCATION
Located halfway between Ajaccio, Corsica’s capital, and Bonifacio, on the island’s southwest coast, Propriano (Prupria in Corsican) is tucked away in the picturesque Valinco Gulf. This serene bay arcs in a wide crescent of turquoise coves, framed by maquis-covered hills that tumble dramatically into the Mediterranean.
Propriano’s northern tip is occupied by a lively marina and a ferry port, just a stroll away from the town’s beach and a quick drive from Campomoro’s idyllic shores. Across the water, panoramic vistas sweep along the gulf’s rugged coastline to the Porto Pollo Peninsula.
Inland, the Taravo and Rizzanese rivers nourish lush valleys where life has long pulsed to the rhythm of grape and olive harvests, with traditional arts and crafts still alive in nearby perched villages. Baracci Canyon, carved into striking red walls, will appeal to thrill seekers who like fun aquatic recreation in the torrent’s natural pools and cascading waterfalls.
The area brims with historic treasures, from ancient megaliths at the cherished Filitosa site to Genoese watchtowers and the medieval stronghold of Sartène-its gray granite cobbled streets exuding a profoundly Corsican soul from a towering rocky spur.
BOOK A GLASS-BOTTOM BOAT TOUR OF VALINCO GULF
Join a glass-bottom boat tour in Valinco. Swim in turquoise waters, spot playful dolphins, and enjoy wild coastal landscapes on a comfortable boat with shaded areas, restrooms, complementary rosé wine and water.

HOW TO GET THERE?
If you travel by plane, fly into Figari Sud-Corse or Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte airports- both just over an hour’s drive from Propriano. This guide features flight timetable information to help find the best connections from major European cities to both destinations.
Those who arrive by car can take direct ferries from mainland France to Propriano’s port (consult the Corsica Ferries booking guide), or head to larger Corsican hubs in Ajaccio and Porto Vecchio. Note that Ile Rousse and Bastia ports involve longer drives exceeding three hours. From Sardinia, Bonifacio’s ferry port lies only 55 km away, a quick coastal ride to Propriano.
BOOK A SUNSET BOAT TRIP
Embark on a magical 2-hour sunset boat trip to a nature reserve to see the Calanques of Valinco Bay, a protected coastal region sheltering abundant endemic species of fauna and flora. The tour includes a swim stop and a rosé wine aperitif.

IS PROPRIANO WALKABLE?
Propriano is a small, compact town where the main sites lie within easy walking distance along the waterfront coastal road. In a one-kilometre radius, you’ll reach the bustling port lined with ice-cream parlours, bars and restaurants, the hilltop town church overlooking the harbour, and sandy town beaches with golden shores.
The centre offers all essential shops for groceries and souvenirs, along with key services. Boat tours and watersports launch right from the marina, making Propriano ideal for ditching the car and embracing slow-paced coastal vibes. I particularly like bike excursions from Propriano along the coast- sparkling, crystalline-water coves and excellent seaside restaurants dot the shoreline.
BOOK A JET SKI TOUR OF VALINCO GULF
Experience a thrilling Jet Ski ride in the Gulf of Valinco. With the guidance of an experienced instructor, prepare for an unforgettable adventure as you explore picturesque creeks and encounter diverse wildlife.

PARKING
Propriano has both paid and free parking options, including roadside spaces. The most central choice is the large port car park, paid during peak season, from which the town centre is an easy stroll away.
Generous free lots are between Plage du Lido and the ferry terminal (just a couple of minutes’ walk to the waterfront), plus another right by the cosy Plage de Propriano east of the port. Inland, behind the main waterfront artery, in the residential district, you’ll find additional fee-free spots and roadside parking.
Church-area and its access road also provide spaces for vehicles, but in summer, heavy traffic and circling drivers can trap you in gridlock.
RENT A BBQ BOAT WITHOUT A LICENSE
Savour unique moments with family or friends aboard a BBQ boat that doesn’t require a license and is easy to pilot. Grill, eat, sip cocktails and swim in translucent waters of Propriano’s coast. For groups up to 9 people.

ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING STATIONS
Charging points are located in municipal car parks, supermarkets or service stations, including the Vito Digiacomi et Fils station at Lieu-dit San Giuseppu, the Auchan supermarket at Vigna Majo D19A or at hotels and campsites, for example, Hotel Roc e Mare, Tikiti campsite or Residence u Livanti.

BRIEF HISTORY OF PROPRIANO
- The region traces its origins to Antiquity, with Greek, Roman, Pisan, and Turkish presence along the coast. The ancient settlement of Pauca, marked on Ptolemy’s 2nd‑century AD map, stands as its earliest known reference.
- By the 4th-7thcenturies, Christianity had already taken root- archaeological finds of two early churches and a necropolis reveal some of Corsica’s oldest Christian remains.
- Over this period, the area endured Vandal and Saracen invasions.
- In the 11th century, Corsica became a Pisan protectorate with power concentrated in the hands of local noble families.
- After the Battle of Meloria (1284), Corsica passed under Genoese control.
- In the 1500s, Propriano served as a modest port for Fozzano, often deserted due to pirate raids but still visited by ships from Bonifacio and Ajaccio trading grain and oil.
- On 12 June 1564, Samiero Corso and his men landed from Provence to rebel against Genoese rule, though Corso later fell victim to the blood-for-blood vendetta tradition.
- In 1767, during the 18th century Wars of Independence, Pasquale Paoli ordered the construction of the coastal defence tower Torra Nova.
- A year later, under the Treaty of Versailles (1768), Genoa ceded Corsica to France, ending Paoli’s independence movement.
- The 19th century brought major change- between 1838 and 1845, Propriano’s first jetty rose on the Scogliu Longu rocks, giving birth to a modern harbour.
- On 28 June 1860, the Propriano gained autonomy from Fozzano, with the support of Napoleon III.
- By the late 1800s, the town was bustling with steamships, and after the Ajaccio–Bonifacio road opened in 1873, trade and travel flourished.
- From the 1950s onward, tourism turned this quiet port into one of the Valinco Gulf’s leading seaside resorts, prized for its beaches and Mediterranean charm.
- Today, Propriano’s population swells to nearly 15000-20000 each summer.

Walk the lively Propriano promenade along the port lined with yachts and fishing boats. It’s the buzzing heart of town- perfect for shopping, grabbing a coffee, and savouring magnificent gulf views. The waterfront route leads to the Scoglio Longo lighthouse, Propriano’s most photographed landmark. In the evening, the quayside comes alive with open-air concerts and cheerful energy.
2. STOP AT FONTAINE DES DAUPHINS
This central fountain with three playful dolphin sculptures sits amid shops and cafés on the main Avenue Napoléon III. Pause here for photos or a quick break with views of the port. Opposite is the Propriano tourist office and a home goods shop where you will find a large selection of kitchenware, linens and lovely take-home souvenirs.

3. VISIT ÉGLISE NOTRE-DAME DE MISÉRICORDE
Climb the stairs to this recently restored Baroque-style church perched on a hilltop above the harbour. Built between 1868 and 1881, its simple granite and stone facade contrasts with a richly decorated interior. On Sunday mornings, bells summon the weekly mass, locals flock in from all directions, and a powerful choir fills the church with religious and Corsican chants.

Fresh catch, like grilled fish or shellfish, takes centre stage at harborside restaurants. Pair it with local rosé made from Sciaccarellu grapes, or an aromatic white Vermentinu, to fully indulge in regional treats. Typical Corsican dishes, pizzas and simple snacks are also on the menu, granting varied food options for all tastes.
