IS PORTO VECCHIO WALKABLE?
The centre of Porto Vecchio where most of the town’s attractions are found, the old town and the marina, is easily walkable. A stroll from the Citadel down to the harbour takes around 10 minutes but the return trip is slightly longer due to the elevation gain.
To comfortably explore the city, leave your vehicle at one of the car parks and continue your visit on foot. If small children or elderly persons accompany you, use the free electric shuttle linking the town’s key points.
To visit natural attractions and cultural monuments located in Porto Vecchio’s vicinity, ideally, you would need a car. Some of the highlights, such as Plage de Palombaggia, Plege de Santa Giulia, or Bonifacio may be reached by bus departing from Gare de Routière near the marina, but other places are tricky to get to without own means of transport.
PARKING
Porto Vecchio has chronically suffered from a lack of sufficient parking space for both the residents and visiting tourists. Today, it offers over 1000 places in car parks and almost 400 on public roads.

Car parks are paid and tariffs are pricey, varying depending on the zone and season. Generally, the first 20 minutes are complementary.
FREE ELECTRIC BUS
To encourage the use of environmentally friendly means of transport within the city, the authorities have introduced an electric shuttle service connecting the city centre with the port, car parks, and north and south peripheries.

WHEN TO VISIT PORTO VECCHIO?
Next to Ajaccio, Bastia, Corte, and Ile Rousse, Porto Vecchio is one of the Corsican destinations that remain lively and animated year round.
However, if you wish to enjoy Porto Vecchio’s fabulous beaches plan your stay between May and October. Visitors from northern territories dare to take dips even in April and November, but the water temperature is considerably cooler in these months making swimming much less comfortable.
As a rule of thumb, June and September are the best months to explore Corsica, be it its verdant nature or cultural highlights. July and August are the busiest months when prices and temperatures soar, but seawater is balmy and inviting. Winter on the island is lovely too, but attractions, transport, and accommodation options are limited.
BRIEF HISTORY OF PORTO VECCHIO
- The first signs of human activity in the area date back to the 3rd century BC. They highlight the Torrean civilization related to the Nuragic culture developed in northeastern Sardinia.
- In the early Middle Ages, the region was deserted due to malaria spread by mosquitoes.
- Between the 13th and 16th centuries, the Rocca lords residing in the mountains descended to the coast in winter with their livestock.
- The Genoese founded the Poro Vecchio stronghold in 1539 but the Ligurian settlers continued to battle with the disease tragically impacting the mortality rates.
- In 1564, for a few months, the Porto Vecchio port fell under Sampiero Corso’s control but eventually, the Genoese took it back.
- In the 17th century, the city was populated by families from the mountains, who returned to the highlands over summer to escape malaria, thus stumping real development.
- The marshes were drained in the 19th century.
- In the mid-19th century, the city flourished due to the creation of a cork processing plant called Saint Joseph. This thriving industry continued to prosper until 1995, when it declined, faced with the competition of plastic production.
- Porto Vecchio’s salt works stretching across the marshlands were booming from 1795 until the late 20th century. Drained areas allowed for city development.
- Today, the town serves as a major tourist centre vitalized by the construction of the Figari airport. The region is also a preferred summer destination for famous personalities such as Laetitia Casta, Paris Hilton, Carla Bruni or Nicolas Sarkozy.
