The hike to Bergerie de Ballone and Refuge de Tighjettu is one of the most rewarding ways to discover the wild heart of Corsica. Crossing the high Niolu region beneath the island’s tallest peaks, it offers an authentic encounter with pristine mountain landscapes, far removed from crowds and the coast’s bustle.
Though surrounded by imposing granite summits, the route itself is accessible to most walkers in fair shape. Two renowned refuges along the way welcome GR20 trekkers and day hikers, adding a touch of quiet mountain life to the journey. At the foot of the peaks, a crystalline river flows through untouched terrain- a perfect place to pause, picnic, or cool off before heading back down.

NIOLU REGION
The trail to Bergerie de Ballone (also called Auberge d’U Vallone) and Refuge de Tighjetu winds through the pastoral Niolu region in central Corsica, west of Corte. This isolated high plateau can be reached from the east via Scala di Santa Regina, a dramatic, narrow canyon where an old mule track was replaced by a road in the late 19th century, or from the west through Verghio Pass. The Niolu basin is traversed by the upper Golo, Corsica’s largest river, which flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea south of Bastia.
CRADLED BY SUMMITS
On its northwest side, this untamed landscape is dominated by Massif du Monte Cinto, whose many peaks rise above 2500 meters, including Corsica’s highest summit (2706 m). Iconic mountains such as Punta Minuta (2556m), Capu Tafunatu (2335m), Paglia Orba (2525m), and Cinque Frati (1986m) loom above the valley, their distinctive silhouettes defining the horizon. To the south, Punta Artica (2327m), an outpost of Monte Rotondo Massif, marks the natural boundary of Niolu.
SHEPHERDS’ REALM AND HIKERS’ HAVEN
For generations, shepherds have inhabited these solitary slopes, producing exceptional charcuterie and distinctive, strong-flavoured cheeses. Today, local people continue to uphold ancient traditions of animal rearing, artisanal food production, crafts, and polyphonic singing. Life in Niolu revolves around the villages of Calacuccia, Albertacce, and Casamaccioli, whose rustic charm lies at the heart of the region’s cultural heritage. Niolu’s main attractions- the ascents of Monte Cinto and Paglia Orba, or trails to Lac de Nino and the Radule waterfalls in the Valdo-Niolo forest, draw outdoor enthusiasts seeking pure, unspoiled nature in one of Corsica’s wildest corners.

CALASIMA VILLAGE
The trailhead is located 2 kilometres west of Calasima. Nestled in the heart of Niolu, at an impressive altitude of 1100 meters, is the highest village on the island. Its traditional stone houses and church sit beneath the striking silhouette of Paglia Orba. Once a stopover for shepherds, it is now a gateway to scenic hikes in Corsica’s highest mountains. In winter, the hamlet is often covered by a blanket of snow, with only a few year-round residents, but spring brings warm southern light to its exposed terrace, welcoming hikers and outdoor lovers.

ACCESS AND PARKING
In Albertacce, turn off the main D84 road onto the winding D318 toward Calasima, 6 kilometres away. Drive through the village and continue in the direction of the Mémorial aux Morts du Canadair d’Albertacce, commemorating 3 pilots-firefighters who died on 4 July 1970 in a Canadair plane crash while preparing to fight a forest fire. Just below the monument, there is a small bay where you can park your vehicle. Be sure to proceed slowly and stay attentive as the access road leading to the trailhead is narrow.

TRAIL TO BERGERIE DE BALLONE
DISTANCE 9 km round trip ELEVATION 350m DIFFICULTY medium TIME 3-4h
From the parking, continue along the wide, gently ascending tract that extends from the D318, offering magnificent views of the emblematic shark-fin profile of Paglia Orba. Along this section, you may encounter cows grazing freely in abundant vegetation covering the slopes. The animals are accustomed to hikers passing by, but it’s best to keep a distance and avoid direct eye contact (read more about hazards and risks in Corsica).

INTO THE FOREST
After about 2 kilometres, the track bends sharply to the right in a hairpin turn- leave it here and continue along the yellow-marked path heading north into the undergrowth. At Ravin d’Erbariccia, you’ll rejoin the forest track for about 100 meters before its next curve. As before, continue north along the well-marked, signposted path until you reach a small clearing with a cistern.

FINAL STRETCH
This clearing marks the end of the car track that winds up alongside the trail, closed off by a chain. From this point, the path climbs for roughly 1 kilometre over very stony terrain, leading directly to Bergerie de Ballone. Before reaching the sheepfold, you’ll cross a small metal footbridge spanning a mountain stream. In high season, you may also encounter donkeys carrying supplies to the remote bergerie. To return to the parking area, simply retrace your steps along the same route.

BERGERIE DE BALLONE
Bergerie de Ballone is a family-run mountain sheepfold located about 30 minutes south of the Tighjettu Refuge on the GR20 trail. Managed by the Alfonsi family for over 30 years, it offers hikers hot or cold drinks and local products such as artisanal charcuterie and sheep’s cheese. Evening meals include traditional veal or lamb stew, followed by homemade cakes. The site also provides bivouac facilities with hot showers and rental tents, making it a restful stop at the end of stage 4 of the GR20. A spacious terrace overlooks the Crucetta Valley with awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks.
Nearby, a clear mountain torrent cascades over large granite boulders, forming natural pools. After the hike, you can cool off in its refreshing waters and enjoy a quiet moment surrounded by nature, far away from the noisy coastal bustle.

TRAIL TO REFUGE DE TIGHJETTU
If you’ve rested and enjoyed some of Bergerie de Ballone’s delicious mountain specialities but aren’t ready to head back yet, you can continue to Refuge de Tighiettu, located 1.3 kilometres further north. This extension adds about 260 meters of elevation gain and roughly 1 hour to the round trip.
The path, marked in white and red as part of the legendary GR20 trail, begins just behind the bergerie. The terrain is rocky and uneven, typical of Corsican hiking, but the sweeping views of the summits are unforgettable. Beneath this granite chaos, a small refuge perched on wooden stilts clings to the mountainside, as if suspended above the valley. The scenery is utterly spellbinding- it evokes a profound sense of remoteness and grandeur.

REFUGE DE TIGHJETTU
Tighjettu, the fourth PNRC refuge on the GR20 when hiking south from Calenzana, is a place where you can have a glimpse into the everyday realities of hikers tackling the king of Europe’s long-distance trails. Located at 1670 meters, it is renowned for its distinct architecture adapted to the steep, rocky terrain.
With 48 dormitory beds, it’s one of the largest on GR20. Limited bivouac areas are available around the refuge, where travellers can either pitch their own tent or rent one. Although open all year, it is staffed only from May/June until September/October. Facilities include indoor and outdoor kitchens with gas stoves, while a river, ten minutes downhill, provides a refreshing bathing spot. Dinner is served nightly, featuring simple Corsican dishes.

PRACTICAL TIPS
- The route is very well marked, allowing even casual hikers in good physical condition to navigate it easily.
- Weather changes rapidly in the mountains, with storms, heavy rain and strong winds common. Check forecasts before setting out and cancel your adventure in case of adverse weather.
- Mountain refuges operate during the hiking season in Corsica, from late May or early June (once snow melts) through early to mid-October.
- Avoid the trail outside the hiking season due to risks such as avalanches or flash floods from heavy rain.
- Wear proper hiking footwear for the rocky terrain. Trekking poles provide extra stability.
- Pack weather-appropriate protective clothing, including a windproof headband, which proves invaluable on Corsican trails.
- Bring swimwear, a quick-drying towel and water shoes if you plan to splash in the river pools.
- Although much of the path runs through the forest, don’t forget about sun protection, a hat, water, and high-energy snacks.
