LAC DE BASTANI AND MONTE RENOSO – LOCATION AND ACCESS

The scenic trail traverses some of Corsica’s most arresting scenery in the Massif of Monte Renoso in Central Corsica. This remote territory between Col de Vizzavona and Col de Verde is frequented by hikers and lovers of outdoor pursuits who follow the mythical long-distance walk GR20 with its 11th stage variant climbing the summit of Monte Renoso. The beautiful wilderness of the island’s interior contrasts the hustle and bustle of more touristy coastal areas rewarding visitors with an exhilarating adventure.

To approach the trailhead from the Ghisoni village, take the D69 road running south towards Col de Verde and after 6km turn right into a winding D169 going up towards the E’Capanelle ski resort. At the end of the pine-bordered narrow route turn right following the sign for the U Renosu gite. A large car park (1670 m) culminating the twisting ride is a starting point for your hike. Watch out for a small bridge that marks the beginning of the trail.

LAC DE BASTANI – FACTFILE

  • Nestled at 2090 m on the northern side of Monte Renoso, Lac de Bastani belongs to one of Corsica’s highest-positioned lakes.
  • Glacial in its origin, it covers a surface of 4.4 ha.
  • The lake is 310 m long and 180 m wide. Its charming heart-shaped silhouette may be admired from the peak of Monte Renoso.
  • 24 m deep, Lac de Bastani is populated with wild trout and salmon. Fishing is regulated by the local directives.
  • The lake stays frozen 7 months a year.
  • The vivid emerald hue of the water is due to the presence of filamentous microalgae.
  • Swimming in the lake is prohibited.

THE TRAIL TO LAC DE BASTANI

The trail to Lac de Bastani (2090 m) from the U Renosu gite (1670 m) takes around 1h30min. At the car park take the path crossing a small bridge and follow the track up the hill. When you arrive at the intersection turn right and continue climbing the rocky terrain.

45 min into your hike you will arrive at Plateau de Pizzolo (1893 m), a serene grassland peppered with pozzi where free-range cows graze peacefully on green meadows. Although a good place for a short break, the plateau may get windy therefore keep your outer layer of clothing handy.

Once you cross a small stream, follow the path going up towards the lake. From there it is another 30 min of climbing.

Weather allowing, the magical lake basin is an ideal place to enjoy a high-altitude picnic. Emerald-green water of Bastani reflects the majestic backdrop of Monte Renoso with snow patches hugging the vertical walls even in summer. Large granite boulders (moraines) covering the terrain add to the mineral, otherworldly atmosphere of this remote hideaway.

While other popular trails crossing the Corsican mountains experience large numbers of visitors throughout the season, the scenic walk to Lac de Bastani remains a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

MONTE RENOSO – FACTFILE

  • Monte Renoso (2352 m) is the highest peak of the Monte Renoso Massif located in central Corsica.
  • After Monte Cinto and Monte Rotondo, the Monte Renoso Massif is the third-highest mountain range in Corsica.
  • From the summit, you may admire 6 high-altitude lakes including Lac de Bastani and Lac de Nielluccio.
  • Compared to its 2000-meter-high Corsican rivals, Monte Renoso offers more peaceful scenery and gentler hiking conditions.
  • The mountain top crowned with a steel cross and a Moor’s head encompasses a 360° panorama of Corsican emblematic natural treasures including the summit of Monte Cinto.
  • In 1962, the picturesque southern slopes of Renoso became the site of tragedy. An Air-Nautic Boeing carrying 22 players from the Bastia Basketball Club crashed due to bad weather conditions at 2300 m. The rescue team who reached the wreckage site two days later found that, sadly, nobody survived the disaster.

THE TRAIL FROM LAC DE BASTANI TO THE SUMMIT OF MONTE RENOSO

To reach the summit of Monte Renoso from Lac de Bastani, continue climbing up the steep path towards the peak ridge. The rocky plateau opens up to a stupendous panorama across southern Corsica reaching as far as the northern shores of Sardinia. From there, take the path running along the edge of the ridge to enjoy superb views of the heart-shaped Bastani and the eastern plains. The ascent from the lake shores takes around 1 h.

Once you reach the top of Monte Renoso your hard work will be rewarded with some of the best views in Corsica. On a clear day, you may admire the island’s highest mountains including Monte d’Oro, Monte Rotondo, Paglia Orba, and the king of the mountains- Monte Cinto. Take in the breathtaking spectacle of nature before heading back via the same route.

The return journey without stopping at the lake takes 1h30min.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

  • The round trip to the summit of Monte Renoso via Lac de Bastani is 8 km long and takes around 4h-4h30min to accomplish (excluding breaks).
  • The elevation gain is 750 m with the difficulty level marked as moderate.
  • When returning from the summit, avoid the risky direct path descending to the lake and follow the same route you used to climb up.
  • Monte Renoso is often considered the most easily accessible summit of all 2000-meter-high mountains in Corsica.
  • Although grueling due to its rocky terrain, the hike offers fairly straightforward climbing with some use of hands required. In places, the path is steep and technical.
  • Only modest and irregular marking of the trail is available. Watch out for stony cairns dotting the route to guide you along the path.
  • The best time to enjoy the hike is between June and October. A winter ascent should be attempted with an experienced guide due to the presence of snow and unstable weather conditions.
  • Before setting off on the trail check the forecast and prepare accordingly. As the mountain is exposed to strong, cold winds, a windbreak, and headwear may be useful.
  • Carry at least 2 liters of water and snacks to power your climb.
  • Good hiking shoes are essential to tackle the rocky Monte Renoso trail.
  • In summer, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will protect you from strong high-altitude rays.
  • Depending on the network, the signal is moderately available along the trail.
