FANGO VALLEY
The Fango Valley is located in Balagne, a fertile region often called ‘the garden of Corsica’. The nearest town is a fishing settlement called Galeria while Calvi and its famous citadel can be reached within 45 minutes by car.
Being a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1977, the unspoilt valley is surrounded by majestic old oak forests with a backdrop of the breathtaking Grande Barriere– the north wall of the Paglia Orba massif.
The river has its source at the foot of Capu Tafunatu (2335m) and flows into the Gulf of Galeria. The torrent is famous for its crystal clear water forming natural emerald pools perfect for swimming.
FANGO HIKE – PRACTICAL TIPS
Hiking down the Fango River may be an activity of choice for anyone looking to cool off on a fun day trip. Thrill-seekers and adventurers will appreciate a variety of techniques involved in canyoning such as hiking, jumping, swimming, and sliding down the waterfalls.
Considered an ideal first descent, the aquatic Fango journey is perfect for families and beginners alike. No special equipment is needed, however, comfortable sports or water shoes and a hat protecting you from the sun are necessary.
It is also advisable to carry a bottle of drinking water and some energy bars or sandwiches, preferably in a waterproof pouch or a backpack.
It’s best to start the descent around the Tuarelli bridge easily accessible from road D351 winding along the river banks. Depending on how much time you wish to devote to enjoying refreshing natural jacuzzis and swimming passages the hike may take between 3 hours and half a day.

The descent may involve jumps up to 8 meters high- there are more than a dozen of them- however, all are optional and can be avoided.
If you feel unsure about pursuing the hike on your own, a qualified guide can be hired to aid with more challenging activities and transport.
And one more thing- while being delightfully refreshing- the river water is actually warm!

FANGO NATURAL SWIMMING POOLS
Fango River’s course is dotted with emerald pools fabulous for swimming, splashing or simply relaxing. Some of these natural water bathtubs create a succession of basins connected by rocky slides and gushing cascades, an ideal place for families looking to enjoy an aquatic adventure. If you prefer to chill out by the stream in tranquillity, follow the torrent to find a quiet bay granting intimacy.
GETTING THERE
To access Fango, take D351 towards Manso from the scenic D81 road between Calvi and Porto. There are a few spots where you may leave your vehicle. The first place is near the Ponte Vecchiu bridge past the restaurant with a large sapphire-hued basin perfect for swimming.
Another great location is further up the stream, accessible from Aire de Truccia car park. A path descending to the river reaches numerous magnificent pools embraced by colourful rocky walls. Other nice spots for swimming are Ile du Fango and Pont de Tuarelli.
