This itinerary is designed for those who want to experience the variety of northern and northwestern Corsica while avoiding the need to constantly move between locations.

It is particularly well suited to families, thanks to its mix of beaches, easy walks, rivers and boat trips, while couples will appreciate the scenic coastline, picturesque villages and relaxed pace. It is also a great choice for first-time visitors, covering many of the region’s signature sights from one convenient base.

For more active travellers, each day includes optional activities such as scenic hikes, mountain adventures and water sports, allowing you to tailor the itinerary to your interests, mood, and energy levels.

WHY BASE YOURSELF IN CALVI?

Calvi is one of the best places to stay in Corsica, combining the charm of a classic Mediterranean seaside town with an excellent location for exploring the island’s north and northwest. I also list it as the top recommendation in my guide to the best places to stay in Corsica.

Even if you decide to stay local, there is plenty to enjoy. Spend your mornings on Calvi’s beautiful six-kilometre beach, wander the historic citadel, browse the boutiques and end the day with dinner overlooking the marina.

Yet, within easy reach are the Scandola Nature Reserve, Calanques de Piana, Fango Valley and the Agriates, making Calvi an ideal base for almost any travel style, allowing you to experience an extraordinary variety of landscapes without changing accommodation.

WHEN TO VISIT CALVI AND NORTHERN CORSICA?

The best time to visit Calvi depends on the type of holiday you are planning, but for most travellers, June and September are the ideal months. The weather is warm without being excessively hot, the sea is perfect for swimming, and the island is noticeably quieter than during the peak summer season. It’s a great period for boat trips, hiking and other outdoor activities.

May is another lovely option, with the maquis in full bloom, although stronger winds can occasionally affect sea conditions and lead to cancelled boat excursions.

July and August bring the hottest weather and the liveliest atmosphere, making them ideal for beach holidays. It is the perfect time to enjoy Corsica’s rivers and explore shaded forest trails, but long coastal hikes are best avoided in the summer heat. Popular restaurants and boat tours should be booked in advance.

October is a great month for visitors who enjoy walking, sightseeing and a peaceful atmosphere. Temperatures remain pleasant, although shorter days and occasional rain leave less time for exploring.

Winter offers a completely different experience. Calvi turns quiet, with most of the tourist infrastructure closing until spring- only a handful of restaurants and hotels remain open. If you are planning an off-season trip, see my article focused on visiting Corsica in winter.

HOW TO GET TO CALVI?

The most direct way to reach Calvi is to fly into Calvi Sainte-Catherine Airport, which offers both year-round and seasonal connections from several French and European cities. The airport is just a 10-minute drive from the town centre. Alternatively, you can fly into Bastia or Ajaccio, which is a good option if you plan to explore other parts of Corsica during your trip.

You can also arrive by ferry from mainland France, Italy or Sardinia. The closest ferry port to Calvi is in Ile Rousse. Bastia and Ajaccio are also convenient arrival points.

DO YOU NEED A CAR FOR THIS ITINERARY?

For this itinerary, having a car is strongly recommended. Many of northern Corsica’s best beaches, villages and natural attractions are spread across the region and are difficult to reach by limited public transport.

Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, stop at scenic viewpoints and visit more remote places such as Fango Valley and Bonifato Forest.

That said, you will not need to drive every day. Several experiences featured here, including boat trips and organised excursions, allow you to discover the region without worrying about navigation, parking or winding mountain roads.

If you are planning a car-free trip to Corsica, I have put together a guide highlighting the best places to stay without a vehicle. Calvi is among the three recommended destinations, with several attractions that can be reached on foot, by train or as part of organised tours. With a few adjustments, this itinerary can also be followed without a car, although you may need to skip some of the more remote locations.

WHERE TO STAY IN CALVI?

Calvi is a compact, walkable town, and staying close to the centre is the best choice for most visitors. From here, you can easily walk to the beach, restaurants and shops, while the harbour, where most boat tours depart, is just minutes away.

The area around Calvi Beach is an excellent option for families and anyone seeking a relaxed seaside stay. Depending on your exact location, the town centre is just a 10-15 minute walk away.

If you prefer a quieter setting, nearby villages such as Lumio or Sant’Ambroggio offer a calmer ambience while remaining within easy reach of the town.

DAY 1 – CALVI

Your first day is all about getting to know this charming coastal town and settling into the slower pace of Corsican life. Wander through the cobbled streets of the Citadel, browse local boutiques, and enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the harbour. End the day on the water with a sunset cruise around the bay.

MORNING

Start your Calvi day with a walk through the Citadel to explore its historic ramparts, cobbled lanes and panoramic viewpoints over the sea and surrounding mountains. Visit the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, the ruins of Maison Colomb and the Oratoire Saint-Antoine to discover more about Calvi’s rich history. Then head down to the port and Quai Landry to enjoy the lively waterfront, explore shops behind the marina for local products and souvenirs, and finish with a seaside lunch.

AFTERNOON

There is no better way to end the day than watching the sun dip behind the horizon. Join a 2-hour sunset boat trip from Calvi marina to explore the bay and enjoy a magical evening on the Mediterranean. The excursion includes a swimming stop and an aperitif on board. For groups of up to 12 people or a more intimate experience, you can book a private speedboat tour with a skipper.

ALTERNATIVE OPTION

As a budget-friendly alternative, spend the afternoon at beautiful Calvi Beach. Take a leisurely stroll along its long sandy shore, swim in the shallow waters, and enjoy a cocktail at one of the beachfront huts. This is also an excellent option for families with children who need downtime after arrival or anyone looking for a more relaxed first day.

DAY 2 – BEACHES

After yesterday’s introduction to Calvi, slow the pace and enjoy one of the town’s greatest assets- its beautiful coastline. Spend the day on Calvi Beach, discover quieter nearby coves, snorkel from the boat, or hop on the coastal train to Ile Rousse. Day two is all about soaking up the Mediterranean bliss before more adventurous excursions later in the week.

MORNING & AFTERNOON

Spend the day unwinding on one of the region’s beautiful beaches, among the best in Corsica. Families will love Calvi Beach, a long, gently sloping bay with calm waters, restaurants, watersports, and easy parking. The adventure park (https://www.ascimiacalvese.com/) next to the beach will keep children entertained.

If you prefer a more intimate setting, head to nearby coves dotting the shore- Plage de Sainte-Restitude, Marine de Sant’Ambroggio, Aregno Beach, or Bodri Beach are all known for their turquoise waters. At Sant’Ambroggio, you can rent a kayak to explore the coastline from the sea. Ghjunchitu Beach is another stunning option, though the water can get choppier when the wind picks up.

For those looking to add a little adventure to the day, join a snorkelling trip from Calvi marina to discover the area’s remarkably rich marine life and some of the island’s clearest waters.

ALTERNATIVE OPTION

Take the scenic coastal train to Ile Rousse, which stops at several beautiful beaches along the way. Spend a few hours exploring this elegant seaside town, relax on its white sandy shore, or hop off at one of the secluded coves for a quieter day away from the crowds.

DAY 3 – SCANDOLA AND THE CALANCHES

After relaxing on the beach, it’s time to discover the dramatic coastline that has made western Corsica world-famous. A boat trip to the protected Scandola Nature Reserve and Calanques de Piana is the perfect way to explore red cliffs, secret coves, and pristine sea. End the day watching the sun set over Calvi from one of its finest viewpoints.

MORNING

Day 3 is the highlight of this trip. If you choose only one organised experience during your stay, make it a boat trip to the Scandola Nature Reserve and the Calanques. On a 4- or 6-hour cruise, discover Corsica’s mesmerising west coast, including the UNESCO-listed Scandola, where red porphyry cliffs, transparent waters and abundant wildlife create one of the island’s most cherished natural wonders. Nearby, Calanques de Piana rise from the sea in striking rock formations- an iconic sight featured on Corsican postcards.

This memorable tour includes a stopover at the remote fishing village of Girolata, accessible only by boat or on foot. Depending on the cruise length, you can enjoy lunch in Girolata or return to Calvi for a meal in the marina.

AFTERNOON

For spellbinding sunset views, drive up to Notre-Dame de la Serra, south of the town, where a beautiful white statue of the Virgin overlooks Calvi Bay from a rocky promontory. The adjoining chapel stands on the site of a former 15th-century sanctuary.

You can also join a guided quad bike tour that includes a visit to this popular viewpoint. Participants must hold a valid driving licence.

ALTERNATIVE OPTION

For a budget-friendly alternative, set out on a scenic road trip to the Gulf of Porto. While you will experience these iconic landscapes from land rather than the sea, you will still have a chance to see many of the highlights, including Calanques de Piana and the awe-inspiring coastline surrounding Scandola. The drive through the Calanques is considered Corsica’s most scenic coastal route, with countless viewpoints along the way. Leave early, as the round trip is close to 200 kilometres and you will want to stop frequently to admire the scenery.

DAY 4 – HILLTOP VILLAGES

Day 4 offers a glimpse into Corsica’s quieter interior. Venture into the charming hilltop villages of Balagne to explore narrow lanes, artisan workshops and centuries-old churches. Combined with a visit to the Saleccia Botanic Garden, this is a wonderful day to experience Corsica’s culture, traditions and authentic way of life.

MORNING & AFTERNOON

Head into the hills to discover a different side of Corsica. Known as the Garden of Corsica, Balagne is famous for its picturesque perched villages, traditional architecture and living craft traditions. These charming Mediterranean hamlets can be explored on a guided day tour, which combines village visits with a break for a traditional lunch and a refreshing swim stop along the coast. It’s also a great opportunity to pick up gifts and artisanal local products to take home.

Round off the day with a visit to the Saleccia Botanical Garden, where Mediterranean plants, scenic pathways and landscaped gardens provide a peaceful end to your journey. The park is a great choice for families, with a children’s play area, farm animals and seasonal workshops for younger visitors.

ALTERNATIVE OPTION

A full-day 4×4 excursion to the Asco Valley is a fantastic option for those who want to explore the wildest corners of Corsica’s interior. Journey through rugged mountain scenery beneath the dramatic backdrop of Monte Cinto, the island’s highest peak and discover emerald natural pools. Bring your swimwear to enjoy splashing in the river’s crystalline (and cool!) waters.

DAY 5 – FANGO RIVER

Day 5 is all about Corsica’s freshwater fun and adventures in nature. Head to Fango River, an idyllic valley known for its emerald pools, serene kayaking routes, wildlife, and secluded spots perfect for a picnic. Only 45 minutes from Calvi, it is one of the best family-friendly days out.

MORNING

Families and nature lovers will enjoy this peaceful start to the day. From June to September, explore the Fangu Delta by canoe (https://delta-du-fangu.fr/), gliding quietly through calm waters within the UNESCO-designated Falasorma-Dui Sevi Biosphere Reserve, surrounded by water lilies, pond turtles and abundant birdlife. The self-guided excursion takes around one hour, with single, tandem and family canoes available for €8 per person. A dedicated picnic area is available for visitors, or you can enjoy a meal at La Ciucciarella, a popular riverside restaurant.

AFTERNOON

The afternoon is filled with adventure and relaxation. Fango River flows through one of Corsica’s most unspoilt valleys beneath the towering northern face of Paglia Orba. Surrounded by wilderness, the torrent is dotted with crystal-clear pools perfect for swimming or water hiking, while natural slides add a fun element for children. Despite its mountain setting, the water is surprisingly warm.

ALTERNATIVE OPTION

Hikers and nature lovers can swap Fango River for Bonifato Forest and Figarella Valley, an oasis of tranquillity just 30 minutes from Calvi. This beautiful mountain setting abounds with shaded trails, rushing waterfalls and natural pools beneath the Corsican pines. Families and casual walkers can stick to the easier riverside paths, while experienced hikers may continue to the Carozzu Refuge on the famous GR20 trail for spectacular mountain views and a well-earned meal.

DAY 6 – REVELLATA AND BALAGNE’S VINEYARDS

As your week draws to a close, combine another coastal escape with a taste of Corsica’s local flavours. Start the day with an easy walk along Revellata Peninsula or discover its colourful underwater world on a snorkelling trip, before heading inland to explore Balagne’s vineyards and sample mouthwatering wines.

MORNING

Start your day with an easy coastal hike along Revellata Peninsula, one of the most scenic walks near Calvi. This 9-kilometre trail winds around the rugged headland showcasing red cliffs, secluded coves and captivating Mediterranean views. The eastern side of the promontory has access to turquoise-water beaches where you can swim or picnic. Keep in mind that there is little to no shade along the route, so carry plenty of water and keep your hat on.

If you prefer to avoid walking in the heat, join a snorkelling trip to Revellata departing from Calvi port. This fun excursion combines the pleasures of a scenic boat ride with the chance to explore the underwater world, with all equipment provided. Diving enthusiasts can also book an introductory dive from a speedboat, accompanied by an instructor. No previous experience is required, although this activity is not suitable for children under 8.

AFTERNOON

Continue the day with a visit to Balagne’s vineyards, where an excellent wine tasting and cellar visit tour offers a chance to discover the unique flavours of the region. The experience lasts 3-4 hours and may include convenient pick-up from your preferred location, as well as a picnic of fresh local produce served among the vines.

The aromatic Vermentinu white is the appellation’s true highlight, although local reds made with Scaccarellu and Niellucciu are equally delicious. Paired with Corsican cheeses and charcuterie in a beautiful countryside setting, this is one of the most authentic food and wine experiences in Corsica.

ALTERNATIVE OPTION

As a budget-friendly alternative, you can explore Balagne’s vineyards independently. Visit local estates, taste the region’s wines and enjoy beautiful countryside views framed by the surrounding mountains. DAY 7 – DESERT DES AGRIATES AND PARADISE BEACHES

For your final day, venture beyond Balagne to Desert des Agriates, one of northern Corsica’s most iconic places, home to unspoilt beaches with turquoise waters and powder-soft white sand. Choose between a boat trip or a 4×4 adventure for a memorable finale celebrating the island’s beauty.

MORNING & AFTERNOON

Spend a day exploring the wild Desert des Agriates, a protected wilderness of fragrant maquis, rugged granite hills and sublime beaches that wouldn’t be out of place on a tropical island. At Lotu, Saleccia and Ghignu, the water glistens in all shades of blue while the 37-kilometre Sentier des Douaniers trail follows the coastline between secluded bays.

As access is limited, the best way to discover the Agriates is on an organised excursion. 4×4 tours venture deep into the desert before stopping at the paradisiacal beaches with plenty of time for swimming. Some itineraries combine shore exploration with panoramic mountain viewpoints.

If you prefer to experience the coastline from the water, opt for a boat trip from Sant’Ambroggio, cruising along the Agriates, before anchoring in one of its idyllic coves for a swim.

ALTERNATIVE OPTION

If you’d rather avoid the cost of an organised tour, head to the magnificent Ostriconi Beach, located on the western edge of the Agriates, easily reached by car. Spend the day enjoying its silky sand, turquoise waters and sweeping white dunes. You can walk the initial section of the much-loved Sentier des Douaniers for a taste of the Agriates’ wild coastline. Hiking shoes are essential there.

As facilities are limited, bring a picnic or stop at the Spiga bakery at Lozari for freshly made sandwiches and excellent artisanal ice cream. Avoid visiting Ostriconi on windy days, as the waves may be powerful.

WHAT IF IT RAINS?

An occasional wet day may happen even in summer. If the weather isn’t suitable for the beach or a boat trip, focus on sightseeing, look around the boutiques or enjoy a lazy lunch overlooking the harbour. It’s also a great opportunity to visit one of Balagne’s cellars for a wine tasting, or wander through artisan villages such as Pigna and Sant’Antonino, where galleries, workshops and cafés provide shelter. Here, you can purchase handmade ceramics, jewellery and traditional Corsican products which make for great souvenirs.

For a deeper insight into the island’s history, make a day trip to Corte, Corsica’s former capital. The Musée de la Corse showcases local traditions, rural life and the island’s unique identity through interesting exhibitions. Combine your visit with a walk through Corte’s old town and a meal featuring authentic Corsican cuisine.

WHERE TO EAT IN CALVI?

Calvi has a solid dining scene, ranging from casual beach huts to traditional Corsican restaurants overlooking the marina. During July and August, it’s worth reserving popular waterfront tables in advance. Bakeries, the Calvi market and small food shops are great for picking up supplies for picnics on the beach or in nature. The following restaurants are worth adding to your itinerary.
