WHY IS BASTIA WORTH VISITING?
Bastia, Corsica’s second-largest city and the capital of the Haute-Corse department, offers a magnetic amalgam of history, culture, and Mediterranean charm. Nestled in the northeast at the gateway to the stunning Cap Corse peninsula, it is a vibrant port town that seamlessly integrates its rich Genoese heritage with modern vitality and a nostalgic, very old-world style.
RICH CULTURE
The city’s historic Citadel, perched on a rocky promontory, offers breathtaking views of the azure sea, housing landmarks like the Sainte-Marie Cathedral and the Governor’s Palace, home to a magnificent museum showcasing Corsican history. The atmospheric narrow alleys of Terra Vecchia, Bastia’s old quarter, are filled with Baroque churches such as the impressive Eglise Saint Jean-Baptiste, and charming oratories that reflect the town’s religious and architectural legacy. The famous Vieux Port, lined with lively bars and restaurants, provides a perfect backdrop to enjoy local cuisine while overlooking chic pleasure boats.
SEDUCTIVE VIBE
Despite being a major transportation hub, Bastia retains its authentic character. Numerous vibrant squares like Place Saint-Nicolas or Place du Marché, concentrate daily activity where locals and visitors mingle over coffee amidst historic surroundings. The city’s friendly and open-minded population ensures a warm welcome for anyone willing to immerse themselves in Corsica’s spellbinding charms.
DIVERSE ACTIVITIES
Accommodation options are equally attractive, ranging from cosy guesthouses to stylish waterfront hotels, an excellent base for exploring northern Corsica’s rugged landscapes, including the dramatic Cap Corse, Desert des Agriates with famous Plage de Saleccia, Patrimonio wine region, and Saint Florent.
For those seeking relaxation, Bastia’s picturesque beaches offer a leisurely Mediterranean retreat. Along the pretty coastline, you will find both wide sandy stretches and secluded pebbly coves, all with views of the Italian island of Elba and easy access to the town’s amenities.
BOOK A SAILING TOUR TO THE BEACHES OF THE AGRIATES
Set out on a magical sailing tour from Saint Florent to discover some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean- Fiume Santu, Lotu, and Saleccia. You will have an opportunity to snorkel in the transparent waters lapping the shores of Desert des Agriates. The excursion is not suitable for pregnant women.
9 BEST BASTIA BEACHES

1. PLAGE DE LAVASINA
Located 7 kilometres north of Bastia on the Cap Corse peninsula, the postcard-perfect beach of Lavasina is a charming pebbly cove renowned among the locals and visitors alike for its tranquil, low-key atmosphere and exceptionally clear, turquoise water. On-site, you may enjoy a meal at the beach hut, rent sun loungers and water sports equipment.
The beach is nestled beneath a picturesque village that is home to a famous sanctuary dating back to the 17th century, often referred to as the Lourdes of Corsica. The church is a revered place of pilgrimage, attracting visitors drawn to the miraculous painting of the Madonna. On September 7 and 8, you can partake in celebrations commemorating the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary including candlelit processions and a midnight mass.

ACCESS AND PARKING
Lavasina beach is located around 7 kilometres north of Bastia on D80. If you decide to travel by car you will find parking places along the road near the beach. Due to the limited number of available spaces arrive early in the day.
To reach the beach on public transport, take the C line (LC) bus between the Bastia town hall (Mairie Bastia) and Siscu, and get off at Lavasina. The trip from the town centre takes around 15 minutes. Consult the itinerary, and timetables, calculate the route or buy tickets on the official MyBus site and application https://maps.mybus.io/bastia/. You can buy a single ticket (also available on the bus) or purchase a carnet including 10 rides.
Bus shuttle from Bastia for the procession to the Lavasina sanctuary on September 7 is free.

2. PLAGE DE MIOMO
The Beach of Miomo located in Santa Maria di Lota is dominated by a beautiful Genoese tower culminating its northern end. Equipped with all necessary amenities such as a lifeguard with a first-aid station, showers, inflatable water games for children, and a restaurant, it stretches its gravel and sand shores for 200 meters. Beyond the tower, you will find a smaller bay to spread the towel.
In low season, this iconic waterfront is virtually deserted, but even in summer, it remains relatively calm. For easy sea access bring water shoes. Sadly, dogs are not authorized on the beach.

ACCESS AND PARKING
To reach the beach of Miomo by car follow the D80 road north from Bastia for about 6 kilometers. Behind the beach, you will find a spacious car park (paid in summer) with charging ports and places for disabled drivers.
To access the cove by bus, use the same C line (LC), as for the Lavasina beach, but get off three stops earlier, at Miomu. Essential information regarding Bastia bus travel is on https://maps.mybus.io/bastia/.

3. PLAGE DE GRISGIONE
The cute cove of Grisgione has a distinctly authentic feel characteristic of the beaches dotting the Cap Corse peninsula. With its sand and pebble shore, elegant architecture of nearby buildings and lovely views of Elba, it is known to attract the Bastians on a Sunday morning looking for a refreshing pre-breakfast dip. It is also a great place to enjoy a seaside picnic with friends and family.
Local amenities include an offshore floating platform, a beach kiosk with snacks and a pedalo rental. In season, the beach is supervised.

ACCESS AND PARKING
To access the beach by car, follow the coastal D80 north of Bastia for around 4 kilometres. Limited parking spaces are available by the road just before the beach.
If you are staying in the town’s north districts, Grisgione may be reached on foot. In summer, remember to carry plenty of water and use sun protection including hardware.
To get there by bus from Bastia’s centre, use the C line (LC) until you arrive at the Grisgione stop. Check details here https://maps.mybus.io/bastia/.

4. PLAGE DE LA MARINE DE PIETRANERA
The pretty beach of Marine de Pietranera is a true hidden gem set back from the main road in north Bastia. Known primarily to the locals, this scenic pebbly sweep laced with polished rocks is shaded by elegant umbrella pine trees. In summer, a very popular beach restaurant provides delicious meals (reservations are required in the busiest months) and a lifeguard surveys the area. The cove also features a shower.
The emerald-hued Merine de Pietranera is a popular place for snorkelling but if you wish to enjoy your swim comfortably bring appropriate water footwear. Also, avoid entering the sea during windy conditions or rough waves, as submerged rocks on the seabed may be difficult to spot.

ACCESS AND PARKING
Plage de la Marine de Pietranera is nestled in Bastia’s northern outskirts and can be reached via the coastal D80, however, finding a free space in a car park above the beach is very tricky in season. Alternatively, you may hop on a bus (C line) in Bastia’s centre to arrive in Pietranera (https://maps.mybus.io/bastia/).
Direct foot access to the beach is available via two paths, one at the north end of the cove and another in the middle, both descending from the D80 road.

5. PLAGE DE TOGA
Located only a short walk from Bastia’s centre, north of the town’s bustling port, Plage de Toga (also called Plage Minelli) is a magnificent spot for pedestrians. Dominated by a beautiful, pastel-coloured Villa Ker Maria and towering palm trees, it exudes understated Mediterranean charm.
Plage de Toga’s two pebbly coves are frequented by the residents who enjoy strolls along the picturesque shore. Despite the immediate proximity of the city’s lively activity, the beach retains a peaceful ambience perfect for those seeking a quiet hideout. To enjoy swimming, you will need water shoes. Supervised in summer, the azure-hued Toga is also equipped with a shower.

ACCESS AND PARKING
Plage De Toga is located below D80 past Bastia’s ferry port. You may reach it on foot from the town’s centre via stairs descending from the road.
If you arrive by car, leave your vehicle in the vast Toga Port car park situated before the beach or use a parking bay by the road.

6. PLAGE DE FICAGHJOLA
Plage de Ficaghjola, located just a short distance south of Bastia’s historic Citadel and Old Port, is a charming roadside beach that locals often visit to cool off during the morning hours or after work. In summer, it transforms into a lively spot where young people gather on the surrounding rocks to enjoy water fun.
The beach offers excellent snorkelling opportunities, with stunning views of Bastia’s picturesque old quarter. Despite its location on the main boulevard, Plage de Ficaghjola is an iconic spot among both locals and tourists, thanks to its scenic setting and stunning panoramas. While it might not be ideal as a full-day sunbathing retreat, it’s a great place to experience the refreshing sea and admire the quintessentially Mediterranean seascapes.
During peak season, the beach is supervised and equipped with a shower, making it a convenient stop for those exploring Bastia’s attractions.

ACCESS AND PARKING
The Ficaghjola beach is accessible on foot from Bastia’s beautiful old town via the palm-lined Rte du Front de Mer, a sun-drenched boulevard running along the shoreline. This scenic stroll takes around 15 minutes.
If you arrive by car, you will find parking spaces by the main T11 behind the beach. Be careful when crossing the road as in summer it may get very busy with the incoming traffic.

7. PLAGE DE L’ARINELLA
Plage de l’Arinella, located in the southern Montesoro district, is Bastia’s largest beach. Its wide stretch of silver sand extends for over 2 kilometres to the Biguglia reserve, offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
Cherished by families and watersports lovers, this expansive waterfront provides essential amenities needed for a relaxing beach day such as showers, snack huts, sun loungers, a children’s play area, an open-air gym, a sailing club, and even a skate park.
During summer, Plage de l’Arinella comes alive with vibrant seaside activities, while the off-season provides a quieter atmosphere ideal for peaceful walks along its waterfront boulevard.

ACCESS AND PARKING
To reach Arinella by car from the centre of Bastia, take the main T11 south, then turn left into Route de l’Arinella. Several large car parks behind the beach provide ample space to leave your vehicle.
Another great option in the summer months is to use a free public shuttle (3 connections per hour) departing from the tourist information point on Place Saint Nicholas. The journey takes around 10 minutes. A detailed timetable is available in the tourist office.
The paid bus service from the Toga port to Montesoro runs along line B, however, to get to the beach from the bus stop you have to cross a busy road. Find the detailed itinerary here https://maps.mybus.io/bastia/voyager/lignes/ligne-b-toga-montesoro-ligne-directe/.
Arinella can also be accessed by train linking Bastia with Casamozza. The Montesoro train stop is conveniently located behind the beach. Consult the schedule of the suburban line here https://cf-corse.corsica/horaires/.
Lastly, you can enjoy a leisurely 3-kilometre walk from the town centre, a scenic and relaxing journey that many visitors find particularly enjoyable.

8. PLAGE DE LA MARANA
A narrow stretch of pine-blanketed white dunes separating the protected Biguglia Nature Reserve and the sea is home to a wide, long Plage de la Marana. An extension of the animated Arinella beach, it exudes a more serene ambience appreciated by nature lovers seeking a reposeful hideout close to the city.
Throughout the year, this low-key lagoon-backed strip of soft sand is a popular place for dog owners enjoying leisurely walks, joggers and cyclists. On weekends, locals often gather for family picnics by the water’s edge, where children can play freely in the vast open spaces. With only a handful of beach bars, La Marana retains its natural charm, providing a peaceful retreat that’s both accessible and unspoiled.

ACCESS AND PARKING
To access this beach from Bastia, follow the T11 road southward. At the Furiani roundabout, turn left onto the Route de la Lagune, which runs along Etang de Biguglia. Continue for approximately 2.4 kilometres. On your right, you will find a spacious car park located behind the beach, where you can leave your vehicle.
You can also take the line A bus (LA) from Palais de Justice in Bastia to Gara di Furiani (the Furiani roundabout on T11) and then walk to the beach via Route de la Lagune. Check your itinerary here https://maps.mybus.io/bastia/voyager/plan-du-reseau/.
Suburban trains from Bastia’s centrally located station to Casamozza stop near the Furiani stadium which is just past the roundabout https://cf-corse.corsica/horaires/.

9. PLAGE DE PINETO
Located in Luciana, at the southern edge of the serene Biguglia lagoon, Plage de Pineto is considered one of the wildest beaches near Bastia. This untouched stretch of sandy coastline, framed by white dunes and fragrant Mediterranean vegetation, offers a pristine setting with expansive views reaching the Tuscan archipelago.
While the water here is not as turquoise as on Corsica’s southeastern coast near Porto Vecchio, it remains clear and warm, providing excellent swimming conditions amidst unspoiled nature. Void of amenities, Plage de Pineto is ideal for those seeking solitude away from popular crowded spots. Bring your own supplies and a parasol to fully enjoy this tranquil oasis. Dogs are welcome.

ACCESS AND PARKING
Plage de Pineto lies approximately 17 kilometres south of Bastia, at the southernmost tip of Etang de Biguglia lagoon. To reach it by car, follow the same directions as for Plage de la Marana, continuing southward along the lagoon until reaching a sharp bend. Turn left onto a well-maintained unpaved road that leads to a car park nestled in the Corsican scrubland. From here, a footpath winds through dense vegetation and white dunes, leading directly to the beach.

PRACTICAL TIPS
- East coast beaches may be prone to jellyfish in summer. Check the water surface for these troublesome creatures before going in. If you see many people in the water, swimming is most likely safe. Check my article on risks and hazards in Corsica.
- To enjoy your time on north Bastia’s pebbly beaches bring water shoes. Appropriate footwear will help you enter and leave the sea more comfortably.
- Don’t forget about sun protection. Cover your head, use SPF cream on exposed skin and bring a parasol. Corsican beaches are known for their natural cadre with very few organized areas.
- Watch out for rocks in water, particularly at Bastia’s northern beaches.
- Be sure to bring cash, as many beach huts and bars may not accept card payments.
BOOK A CATAMARAN SEA TOUR
Enjoy a luxury catamaran sea excursion from Saint Florent, touring Corsica’s sublime northern coast aboard a deluxe catamaran. Snorkel in the turquoise sea waters and sunbathe sipping the delicious cocktails from the bar. Choose a day trip or a half-day excursion.
