Enjoy the beautiful Trou de la Bombe hike with exceptional views of Aguilles de Bavella in the heart of the Corsican mountains.
Also known as U Tafonu di u Cumpuleddu, Trou de la Bombe is a geological formation resulting from natural erosion. This 8-meter-wide hole in a giant rock is a highlight of the spectacular Alta Rocca scenery and a popular trekking destination for lovers of the great outdoors.
Relatively short, void of laborious technical challenges, and above all, incredibly scenic, the hike is one of Corsica’s most-revered attractions.

AIGUILLES DE BAVELLA
Aiguilles de Bavella is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Corsica. Being one of the most photographed sites, this natural wonder carries its reputation far beyond the island’s shores.
Beautifully set in the heart of the Regional Natural Park of Corsica in Alta Rocca, Bavella extends into the sky its granite pinnacles providing a magical backdrop to the mountainous scenery of southern Corsica. The jagged peaks and large rock walls descend towards the island’s east coast and its glorious beaches. In clear weather, you can see the vast aquamarine expanse marking the horizon. In the morning, on the other hand, a veil of mist envelops the mountains bestowing on the celebrated site a mysterious, almost mystical aura.
The hilly terrain at the foot of the Needles is carpeted with ancient maritime pines and oak trees while the famous Corsican chestnuts grow in lower altitudes. Various endemic species of flora and fauna thrive in the preserved natural environment.
Underneath the rocky barrier a snow-white marble statue of Notre-Dame-des Neiges, a patron saint of Bavella, overlooks the pass guarding its territory and protecting visitors.
The Bavella Massif is crossed by numerous hiking trails, including the iconic long-distance GR20, giving access to mountain rivers, natural swimming pools and beautiful waterfalls.
LOCATION AND ACCESS
The trailhead of the Trou de la Bombe hike is located at Col de Bavella (1218m) accessible from the archetypal D268 – D368 route. You may start your journey in Porto Vecchio (via Zonza) or Solenzara. Despite its twists and turns, the road is in good condition with several parking areas available along the way. Scenic attractions dotting this famous mountain route grant unforgettable experiences in some of Corsica’s most captivating scenery.
You may leave your vehicle at a specious 120-space car park located at the foot of Bavella (€5 in summer, free outside of season). In the busiest time of the year when the popular site receives its biggest share of visitors look for free spaces at the Viséo 360-space car park 5.6 km south-west of Bavella and use a free shuttle service to transport you to the pass.
At the centrally located information point, you may consult the hiking routes crossing Bavella and its surroundings.
TROU DE LA BOMBE TRAIL
DISTANCE – 5.7km round trip | ELEVATION – 213m | DIFFICULTY – easy to medium | TIME – 2h30min
At Col de Bavella (the Bavella pass) take a red-marked wooded path climbing the hill behind the information hut. Soon after on your left side, you will pass the white-washed Chapelle de la Sainte Vierge. Continue the ascent for another 20 minutes until you reach the hill. From the clearing, you can enjoy picturesque views of the majestic Trou de la Bombe rock.
Continue your hike downward to the crosswords where you need to turn left towards U Cumpuleddu. Red markings will then guide you through a rocky path and some steeper passages, always following the U Cumpuleddu signs. Before reaching the trail-end you will have an opportunity to admire a stupendous panorama of the Bavella Needles.
The final part of the trail is the most technical with a rocky ascent leading to the viewing spot. I strongly advise not to climb the rocky hole due to the sheer drop beyond its edge. Unfortunately, on-site, there have been accidents resulting in death. As there is not much space to move around in the narrow viewing point atop a rocky boulder, visitors might have to take turns in posing for photos with the giant landmark.
Follow the same path to get back to the car park.
USEFUL TIP – To conclude the hike, stop for a delicious Corsican meal at Auberge du Col De Bavella. The cooked-to-perfection board-served stake followed by a homemade chestnut tart may be sampled on the restaurant terrace exposed to awe-inspiring views of Bavella. Cash is the preferred method of payment.
TROU DE LA BOMBE LOOP
Upon your return, halfway into your hike back from Trou de la Bombe, you may take a left turn and follow a parallel path descending to the car park. This route is marginally longer but it opens up to splendid views of Bavella in all its glory.
Before setting out, consult the map exposed at the information point located by the car park. You can also examine the other three trekking propositions around Bavella, all of which are more challenging than the Trou de la Bombe hike.
BAVELLA PILGRIMAGE
Bavella is home to a beautiful yearly celebration aimed at venerating its patron saint Norte Dame des Neiges. Every summer since the 1950s, on the 5th of August, pilgrims flock to this magical place accompanying the statue of the Immaculate on the way to the Chapel for a moment of prayer and contemplation.
The procession is followed by a Holy Mass with the commemoration of the Eucharist and the renewal of the island’s consecration to the Immaculate Virgin. On the way back hundreds of pilgrims sing Marian hymns and unite in praying the Hail Mary.
The backdrop of Corsica’s high mountains spiked with granite needles provides a truly unique setting for this holy event.
